We look around us today and many of us ask this question. Why are there so many people with little or no respect, acting out in violence, promoting sexual lusts from early ages, living with television and culture echoing these to sell themselves? Why?
Prior to the 60’s, children were told they we special, that a loving Creator made them and has plans for them, but that He also created everything and we had to follow His rules. School texts contained mere mentions of evolutionary theory, an average of about 2500 words. Around 1963, the US Government declared that evolution be taught. The number of words jumped to between 27,000 and 33,000! Kids were being now taught that they were just highly evolved apes. Texts said they were nothing but animals that grew by chance from rocks. But that also meant if the Bible is wrong, all those rules are out. Right and wrong is no longer in God’s hands, but is up to us to decide.
From early in grade school we are taught evolution. We are told that these things were found out by scientists who know what they are doing. So of course we believe it. What we believe determines how we act. If we were raised in a culture that said when you killed an enemy, you gained his ability and insight by eating his brain, you would act accordingly. If you were raised in a culture that said you cannot eat pork, you wouldn’t eat it. This is what we have done to our children.
We told them that sex was no longer a sin but an expression and between 1965 and 1970, sexually transmitted diseases increased from 400 out of 100,000 to 900 (Source: Center for Disease Control) . By 1975 to over 1200!! We told them to be “free thinkers” and the benefits of peace, love and rock and roll and College Entrance exam averages (SATs) dropped from around 970 in the 50’s and early 60s to below 900 by 1975 (source: College Entrance Exam Board). We told them that there was no supreme authority who set the rules and violent crimes went from a steady 200,000 through 1963 then jumped to 1 million by 1975 and 1.7 million by 1990 (source: Statistical Abstracts of the United States and Dept of Commerce, Census Bureau).
We told ourselves that you didn’t have to wait for marriage to have sexual relations. Unwed births went from a steady figure of around 15 per 1000 girls through 1963, to 25 per 1000 in 1975 to 45 in 1985 (source: Dept of Health and Human Resources and Statistical Abstracts of the United States). We told them that you no longer had any obligation to “until death do us part” and divorce rates in 1963 were around 2.5 per 1000 couples. By 1980 it had more than doubled (source: US National Center for Health Statistics, Vital Statistics of the United States).
We tell our kids they are nothing more than advanced apes and they act like them. We tell them that sex doesn’t have to wait for marriage and young teens sleep around. We tell them that there is no supreme authority whose rules they must obey, so they don’t obey rules. We tell them that IF they get caught, they’ll be punished so they sneak around behind our back where WE won’t see and do it anyway. We no longer tell them they have to obey their parents because God commanded it, so they don’t. We tell them violence is bad then tell them that violence and death is the hero behind evolution and the reason we are such an advanced culture, and then wonder why they think violence isn’t so bad.
Why do they act that way? Because that is what we teach them.
